One of the most common prescriptions for those who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea is a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device. CPAP devices come in a wide array of features, prices, and styles and it can be very confusing. The challenge is finding the device that is right for you. Here are some tips to keep in mind when making a decision on which device to purchase.

Talk with your doctor to determine what your specific needs are. During your sleep study many different types of information were recorded about your sleep apnea. Depending on what was found, you will have specific criteria to look for in your device. Some things to ask about when getting your prescription would be the ability to upgrade device as technology improves as well as the inclusion of a humidifier if needed.

Talk with your insurance company on what they will cover. Medical coverage of CPAP devices vary greatly from one provider to the next. While one will limit you to price, another might only pay for specific models or feature sets. Better to make a quick phone call or email than to be surprised at a nasty medical bill down the road!

Do your homework. Not all CPAP machines are created equal. Masks, tubing, and straps are all interchangeable and can be easily switched out. The configurations are endless. Ask around for advice from those in your social circles or find reputable information from places like Apnea Support Forum or a local A.W.A.K.E group.

Find a medical supplier who will let you rent before you own. Nothing is worse than being stuck with a machine that seemed to be the perfect fit, but for whatever reason didn’t work out. If your supplier does not rent, at least inquire about the return policy. (In most cases, even a 30 day return policy will give you enough time to make a solid decision.)

Test, adjust, repeat! It takes months or even years for some to find the right combination of masks, hoses, machines, and other equipment that will bring true relief to their sleep apnea. Whatever you do, don’t give up! Because when you DO find the right combination the payoff will be tremendous.
